It’s a new scheme for hackers to access data via email, this time from Gmail, and thereby cheat financially the recipient of the fake email. Already there are many injured, mixed in the 800 to 900 cases for illegitimate access to data and computer fraud that run terms in the computer crime section of the Lisbon Judicial Police, as confirmed to the coordinator of criminal investigation Carlos Cabreiro.
Gmail’s mockery, as it became known, is a classic method used by hackers to do phishing (the “fishing” of personal data such as passwords, number of credit cards, etc.) via email. The hackers ‘first pass is to access users’ passwords through Google’s email. Then choose a contact from your personal list and send a false email with an attachment through this sender (so you do not mistrust). On the other hand, the recipient does not suspect because he thinks he is opening an email from a friend. When you open the file, the victim is directed to a fake Google login site where they will post their data without knowing that they are sharing it with the hacker.
The fake login page on the Google portal is identical to the official page. The only distinguishing mark is the address. At the beginning of the URL it reads “date: text / html”, which does not happen on the authentic Gmail login page.
“We do not like to talk about gossip mockery,” said Carlos Cabreiro, “because it’s an e-mail scam made by traditional credentials.” Gmail is no more fragile than any other mail. Fragile is the protection that many computers and mobile phones have. “People have to get used to better protecting their data: they must choose strong passwords, have good antivirus installed, or have upgraded operating systems.”
Of the complaints that the computer crime section of the PJ of Lisbon has received as a mockery of Gmail or other electronic mail, some are due to the devastation of private life by means of computer (through social networks, for example) and others go directly to the collection Of funds.
“Anyone who has remote access to your computer can email you on your behalf,” said the criminal investigation coordinator.
“Much of computer crime is in illegitimate access to data and the intrusion on computers.” And for computers, read also the smartphones. In the last year PJ noticed a slight increase in the number of cases for crimes committed using mobile platforms. In total in 2015, the PJ of Lisbon reached the end of the year with 858 investigations opened for computer crimes, of which 500 are for cyber attacks, 250 for Internet pedophilia, 70 for sexual extortion and 30 for crimes against people on the Internet ( Defamation, among others), according to official data. This police made more than 300 defendants for these crimes, 21 of them for hactivismo. Sextoring or sexual extortion, one of the most popular ways, is based on access through the social networking request (facebook). Then they persuade the victim to undress-look and are later blackmailed.
